Colon Detox

The colon is the final part of the digestive system and a very important organ with many different functions. It processes fecal waste and reabsorption of fluids, salts vitamins and other foods that were not broken down in the small intestine, and finally, elimination of solids from the body. Doing a colon cleanse is extremely beneficial because if the colon is not functioning correctly, it can cause all sorts of issues. Instead of removing toxins, it begins to absorb them, resulting in conditions like:

  • fatigue
  • constipation
  • weight gain
  • headaches
  • bloating
  • potential chronic diseases

What are the main reasons for an unhealthy colon?

The main reason many of us encounter implications with our colon is strictly down to our unhealthy eating habits. We ingest highly processed foods that are packed with additives, preservatives, pesticides and the majority are chemically inhanced during the growing stage. Our air is polluted and chemicals are everywhere in our homes. We are exposed to pollutants constantly and this, unfortunately, takes its toll on our colon. These toxins, after being broken down, remain in the colon for a period of time before they are elimated. During this time, these toxins are constantly absorbed back into the body and directly into the blood stream. It is similar to an IV drip constantly feeding toxins into the body.

How can we help our bodies with a colon cleanse?

There are many colon cleanses out there, each of them claiming miraculous results. Though some are beneficial and do produce good results, I always prefer to do it naturally if I can. I “clean out the house” using the right foods; nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables, and juices. Not alone do these foods clear up the colon, they also have positive effects in many other areas of the body.

Foods to Help with a Colon Cleanse

There are certain types of food you can eat to help cleanse your colon. These certain foods will help with inflammation, getting ‘things’ moving and cleaning up your colon. Add them into your everyday diet to keep your colon in optimal health.

Here is a list of powerhouse foods that cleanse the colon of any built up toxic waste:

Apples and Apple Cider Vinegar

Apples have always been known as a powerhouse for cleansing the body. Remember the old saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” This is true to some regard. Apples are high in fiber and therefore help to get things moving in order to keep the colon clean. The best part of the apple is in its skin, called Pectin. Pectin acts as a thickening agent, it helps remove toxic build up in the colon and strengthens the lining of the intestine.

Flax and Chia Seeds

Flax and Chia seeds are great for overall health. Even more so when it comes to colon health. Both seeds contain fiber, fats and healthy Omega-3 which all aid in healthy digestion. They contain a special type of fiber that helps optimize the overall digestion process.

Fermented Foods

Recent research into the effects of fermented food on our gut, brain and other body health has caused foods like sauerkraut and kimchi to make a steady comeback. The fermenting process encourages the growth of essential bacteria such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. These good bacteria break down lactose, sugars and starches in food, making them easier to digest. Once they reach your gut, they help keep E. coli and C. difficile away. By consuming fermented foods you will keep your digestive system in the best health possible, including your colon.

Beans and Lentils

Legumes are known for their ability to cleanse your colon. They are packed full of antioxidants, phytonutrients and fiber! They are very nutrient dense foods, including being rich in Zinc, Potassium, Calcium, B Vitamins and Protein. By consuming foods that are rich in the above nutrients, it will help remove toxins from your body. They also help to keep your bowel movements normal. This, in turn, will help keep your colon clean and your digestive system running optimally.

Dark leafy greens are vital for good health. They provide your body with chlorophyll which will stick to the lining of the colon and stops the growth of bacteria. Chlorophyll will also remove bacteria that has accumulated and then heal the mucus lining in the gastrointestinal tract.
