Yeast Infection

Treat The Cause And Not The Symptoms

Vaginal Yeast Infection

What is a vaginal yeast infection?

Yeast infection (vaginal) is a yeast infection caused by yeast (fungus) known as Candida albicans. That type of fungus can present in a healthy vagina without any symptoms. Moreover, the fungus can be found in all over your body, mostly present in warm and damp areas. Vaginal yeast infection is also referred to Candidal vaginitis. It commonly happens in women, especially in the vaginal area. Most women will experience a vaginal yeast infection in their life.

Causes of vaginal yeast infection

Yeast infections can be developed when the balance between bacteria and yeast changes. Too much yeast in your vagina can cause itching, burning and even yeast infection symptoms. If a woman is already infected with vaginal yeast infection, she probably would have another infection in the future. Furthermore, a vaginal yeast infection is not considered as a sexually transmitted disease because it can also happen in women who are not sexually active. However, be careful because yeast can be spread by sexual contact.

Here are some other factors that can cause the infection:

  • Weak immune system

  • Antibiotics

  • Taking oral contraceptives

  • Pregnancy

  • Diabetes

  • Eating habits (lot of sugar)

  • Stress

  • Use of perfumed vaginal hygiene sprays

The most common vaginal yeast infection is from Candida albicans and this kind of yeast is not serious and can be treated with medications. However, if you leave the infection untreated, it can lead to the more serious condition. Not just women, it is possible for men to get symptoms of skin irritation at the tip of the penis from yeast infection after sexual contact with an infected partner.

Symptoms of vaginal yeast infection

Women with any of the symptoms listed below should see the doctor or it can lead to serious infections. Vaginal yeast infection can cause itching but not cause pain. When women experience pain, they should see a doctor. The common symptoms are:

  • Burning, redness and swelling around the vagina

  • Itching around vagina

  • Pain when urinating

  • Pain during sex

  • Vaginal discharge (thick and white that looks like cottage cheese)

Treatment for each vaginal yeast infection is different, so it is better if you contact your doctor and the doctor will suggest what is best for the treatment for you. If you have a simple infection, the doctor usually gives you a tablet, anti-fungal cream, ointment, or suppository, all of which, have chemicals that are harsh for the body.
